Deloitte names audit leader as next CEO
Veteran auditor Joanne Gorton will succeed consultant Adam Powick in February.
Deloitte has named audit and assurance managing partner Joanne Gorton as its next chief executive to succeed outgoing CEO Adam Powick.
Gorton would take the reins as CEO on 1 February, the big four firm said.
Board chair John Greig said Gorton had a clear vision for the firm’s future amid the regulatory upheaval faced by the professional services industry.
“I am confident she will drive positive change as we continue to navigate this challenging period for professional services resulting from new technology, complex economic and geopolitical conditions and changing regulatory, societal and market expectations,” Greig said.
He said she was an “exceptional leader” respected by clients and colleagues, with a track record for client service and embracing technology.
Gorton joined the firm as an audit partner in 2016. She was appointed managing partner of audit and assurance in 2020 and led a multi-year, technology-driven transformation of the division, Deloitte said.
She began her career at PwC in 1996.
According to Deloitte’s website, her experience spans various industries, including high-profile ASX100 clients and large public companies.
In addition to her audit roles, she also provided advisory services such as internal audit, risk management, compliance and accounting advice on complex transactions and arrangements.
Gorton said her focus as CEO would be “our clients and our people”.
“I am thrilled to accept this appointment and for the opportunity to lead Deloitte Australia.”
“Despite challenges in the near-term outlook, the future for our firm is exciting as we work together with our clients to unlock the potential of new technologies and opportunities while also making a positive impact on the economy and our communities.”
Outgoing CEO Adam Powick said: “I am really pleased to transition the Deloitte CEO role to an accomplished and client-centric leader like Jo.”
“Jo is an authentic and supportive leader who recognises the power of diverse teams in delivering value for our clients and our people. Jo is an excellent choice and I wish her all the best in this new role.”
Powick, a consultant, has held the position since 2021.
