Grant Thornton bolsters tax group with 2 partners
Experts in indirect tax and data analytics bring valuable skills to the team, the firm says.
Grant Thornton has added two partners to its tax group, with Rhys Penning (left) joining the Melbourne office and Troy Wilson (right) starting in Sydney.
Grant Thornton said Mr Penning brought 25 years’ experience with a focus on GST technical and legal knowledge to the indirect tax role. He combined “commercial acumen with professional judgement” to deliver strategic but practical advice to clients.
Mr Wilson, who started this week as partner for data transformation and analytics, worked with automation and technology to develop tax strategies for clients.
The firm said he brings experience as an accounting and taxation adviser for both large and mid-sized professional practices and blended this with time as start-up owner and CFO.
National managing partner for tax Sandie Boswell said both have added valuable skills to the tax team.
“Rhys’s wealth of GST technical and legal knowledge coupled with his compliance and governance skills mean he is now a recognised GST thought leader in Australia,” she said.
“Troy is a valuable addition to our data transformation and analytics team with a focus on client collaboration for solving complex challenges and a deep range of experience in developing and adopting technology solutions.

She said Mr Penning was an active member of the Property Council’s GST subcommittee and the Retirement Living Council’s tax committee for many years, as well as involvement in many government and ATO consultations.
Mr Wilson previously worked for Grant Thornton for 15 years as a partner in the business services team and is returning after nine years away in a range of technology-based roles.
His work included de-risking tax processes, developing business intelligence dashboards and taxation applications. He had been the lead on numerous remedial engagements involving complex data transformations, which had evolved into developing tax applications for specific client and business problems.
