pitcher partners appoints new cross border tax advisory partner

Pitcher Partners Sydney announced the first partnership appointment for 2025 to strengthen its existing cross-border tax advisory.

Pitcher Partners Sydney is bolstering its existing cross-border tax advisory offering with the promotion of Terry Hoban to partner.

According to the firm, Hoban’s appointment was the first of the new year and was effective from 1 January 2025.

Pitcher Partners said Hoban was appointed to partner based on his 17 years of experience as a global mobility and US tax specialist.

It was also noted that Hoban had built a sound reputation as a trusted tax adviser for Australians moving to the US, and US residents residing in Australia.

Hoban said he took pride in his role as a tax adviser for people wanting to move overseas.

“Relocating overseas is already a challenging process, and navigating the US tax system adds another layer of complexity, particularly Australians with typical investment structures like family trusts and SMSFs.”

“Even if US nationals move abroad, they are still required to file an annual tax return. The process is incredibly complex, with the documentation often exceeding 100 pages, so a knowledgeable team in your corner is invaluable.”

Hoban also had big four experience before joining Pitcher Partners in July 2024, including having led the US individual tax practice at KPMG Australia.

Pitcher Partners Sydney managing partner Adam Irwin said Hoban’s appointment to partner further enhanced the firm’s specialist tax offering to service the growth area.

“This is a complex area, and we recognised some time ago that there was an opportunity for our firm to specialise in providing cross-border tax advice. We are the only firm in the mid-market with US in-house tax capabilities, and the demand for advice in this area continues to grow,” Irwin said.

“Hoban’s promotion recognises the significant contribution he has made to our existing specialist tax capabilities and our firm, as well as the value he has delivered to our clients. His global tax expertise is crucial to helping people make the right decisions now, for the future.”

Hoban said his cross-border tax advisory support also extended beyond individuals to Australian companies expanding across the Pacific, including their founders and employees.

“Our advice is most effective when we have the opportunity to get it right up front, rather than having to untangle affairs that have become more complicated,” he said.

“By taking the time to truly understand our clients, we can offer practical and commercial guidance as well as a clear understanding of how we will navigate their situation together.”
